Brunswick House

by Adam Kane Architects

Melbourne-based architecture and interior design studio, Adam Kane Architects have expanded and transformed an existing Californian bungalow in the suburb of Brunswick. Timelessness was a focus of the design to ensure the home ages gracefully for its residents — a growing family. A sense of calm is conveyed through thoughtful restraint and the avoidance of ornamentation in combination with the home’s use of whites and greys, natural stones, and light-coloured timber boards. Special attention was paid to ensuring a seamless flow from the old to the new and achieved through shared materiality and the matching of proportion and scale.

Refined and visually striking, two new volumes added to the rear of the property are stacked and pivot away from one another to create an organically covered area below. The surrounding landscape has been designed as a living artwork with the home’s framed openings showcasing the changing colour and fullness of the garden throughout the year.
