How do you remaster excellence? Legendary British hi-fi company Naim has certainly concocted the perfect recipe for refinement with its second-generation Mu-So. A substantial bump to its multi-award-winning predecessor, the all-in-one wireless music system is an exceptional, comprehensive and powerful statement for those as serious about design as they are performance.
The lack of physical buttons helps the sizeable speaker maintain its beautiful seamless look, which is sleek and minimalist with an eye-catching burnished aluminium body and mesh speaker grille which curves ever so slightly to create a silhouetted wave pattern. By default, the lightweight grille is standard black but can be swapped for several colour options like Olive, Peacock or Terracotta.
From the buttery smooth onboard dial to the translucent base which turns heads in low light, the striking Dark Grey Brushed Metal model looked fantastic in any position around the office as well as at home. The body is also as wide as the sound-stage it can muster, contrasting its pared-back aesthetic with a sonic performance that’s remarkably detailed and immersive.
Fifteen touch-sensitive buttons offer complete onboard control when it comes to the luminous dial, but the Mu-So 2 can also be dictated by a feather-light remote that’s clean and uncluttered. I found myself using the accompanying smartphone app for the most part, seeing as it’s loaded with comprehensive features cleverly curated to maximise customisation.
Connectivity offers numerous ways to interact with the speaker through both digital and analogue inputs, opening up to everything from Bluetooth, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast, to a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB slot. There’s even HDMI eARC to easily transform the Mu-So into a powerhouse soundbar for home cinemas.
The Mu-So’s audio performance is every bit as praiseworthy as you could reasonably expect from such a high-end device. 95% of the internals have been improved over the first-generation, which now includes six dedicated amplifiers and a complex digital signal processor with a whopping 2,000 MIPS capable of reproducing fine detail and maintaining vibrancy along with the incredibly nuanced bass response and impeccable balance. The team at Naim have outdone themselves with the Mu-So 2, presenting a high-end music box that’s been clearly engineered with superior performance in mind.
