Conservatorium Hotel Amsterdam

You’d almost be forgiven for never leaving Conservatorium Hotel. The Amsterdam destination—a large, grand 19th- century neo-Gothic building once home to a bank—is almost a neighbourhood in itself. Walk into the lobby, and you’ll soon get a feel of what the Conservatorium is all about. The lobby area is part of the hotel’s vast internal glass courtyard where on one side you’ll see the original brick exterior and on the other, floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Sleek black leather sofas and armchairs sit alongside tall lamps and a large statue of Amsterdam’s most famous rabbit, Miffy. This is a hotel that is refined, embracing its original design, yet isn’t afraid to add a few modern or quirky twists.

Along from the lobby, the courtyard continues and moves seamlessly into the Brasserie, where breakfast is served. Expect classics such as avocado on toast alongside more varied options like seared tofu with black beans, shiitake, and spring onion. For afternoon drinks, there’s nowhere better than the Terrace when the sun is out. Head there before dinner at the Conservatorium’s contemporary Asian-inspired eatery, Taiko, and then onto Taiko Bar for late-night cocktails.

Away from the vibrant public spaces is the hotel’s spa, Akasha. Complete with an organic bar, fitness club, watsu pool, and whirlpool sauna, this is a tranquil retreat worth spending at least a few hours enjoying.

When it comes to the rooms and suites, they’re all spacious—especially for Amsterdam—with clean lines and muted tones offset by flashes of colour echoing the style of the rest of the hotel. You’ll find artwork and views across the city, and in the polished limestone bathrooms, relaxation comes in the form of rainfall showers and deep soaking bathtubs. When you do want to leave to explore the city, you couldn’t be in a better location. The Conservatorium is right at the heart of Museumplein, with many of Amsterdam’s best museums, restaurants and shops on its doorstep.
