Apple have clearly outdone themselves with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, presenting a smartphone that not only positions itself as their best device to date, but redefines the industry that they helped pioneer. Balancing an increase in size and thickness with a graceful and premium aesthetic, the Pro Max features a number of inventive design choices that make this phone as attractive as it is powerful.
On the front, the phone’s power-friendly 6.5-inch custom-designed OLED Super Retina XDR display is impressively bright and colour accurate, offering an immersive visual experience at 2,688 x 1,242 resolution with a pixel density of 458ppi. Simple to navigate and unfailingly efficient, everything that pops up on the screen is fluid and intuitive, helped along by the new A13 Bionic chip—the fastest in any smartphone to date.
On the back of the phone, a stunning textured matte frosted glass casing and polished stainless steel band helps the iPhone 11 Pro Max look fantastic no matter the finish, the most eye-catching being a new Midnight Green or solid Gold. The choice to go with frosted glass also means the phone is great at repelling noticeable fingerprints, maintaining a clean profile that’s mostly uninterrupted, save for a sharp and angular glass panel encasing the new triple-lens camera array.
This phone’s photography prowess shows with improved and seamless image processing to produce stunning results, whether that be capturing four times more scene with the ultra-wide-angle lens, enhancing ambiance with the low-light night mode, or making a subject pop with portrait mode. The camera system is the true hero of this phone, coupled with all the additional features that make both photography and videography a smoother and more enjoyable process, such as the editing interface which is intuitive and allows for a greater level of customisation than previously available in the native app.
The ability to shoot in 4K at 60 frames per second is augmented with excellent cinematic stabilisation and extended dynamic range, capturing video that is crisp and smooth from any of the three lenses.
Other features of the phone work reliably fast and add up to a better overall experience. Biometrics, for example, is another area in which Apple has advanced, with Face ID being very fast even in low-light situations. Battery-life is also taken up a notch, with a 3,696 mAh rated battery that will easily last an entire day even with quite intensive use.
