Wake Up Call festival, run by luxury hospitality brand W Hotels, first debuted in 2016. Earlier this month it made its way to Asia for the first time, after W Hollywood and W Barcelona had their turn earlier in the year. To check it out for ourselves, we travelled to Bali and stayed at W Bali – Seminyak, who hosted the world-class, two-day music festival. The line-up included a cocktail of music genres catering for a range of tastes, with artists such as Angus & Julia Stone, Tove Lo, Sam Feldt, Maribou State, Nora En Pure and more.

The festival was set up within the grounds of the W Hotel, with full pool access and the beachfront just a few steps away. There were two stages where alternating performances were held. The main stage was impressively grand with a large white dance floor — an ambitious choice for a festival. The smaller second stage was also spectacular in its own way. The first set of each evening was played there, and the sunset visual was mesmerising as the sun hit the horizon, with rays reflecting off the ocean behind the DJ.

Having a hotel room at a festival is every bit as good as you would imagine. We relaxed by the pool until late afternoon and then leisurely wandered up to the room for a shower and change of clothes before heading down to join the party. Throughout the night, we were expecting the ground to be sticky from spilt drinks and littered with rubbish but it stayed pristine and the ground staff somehow managed to keep the dance floor white. Toilet breaks were luxurious as we could use the hotel facilities — there were no portable toilets in sight. Those who went for a mid-festival dip in the pool could easily go up to their room to get changed into something dry and comfortable afterwards.

Set up throughout the venue were food and drink stalls serving quality meals and a good assortment of beverages. The overall vibe was friendly and fun with a mixed crowd. It was easy to relax and have some downtime between your favourite sets to grab a bite to eat and soak up the atmosphere.

The next hotel to host the festival is W Dubai – The Palm in early 2019. Marriott Rewards and Starwood SPG members get first dibs on tickets and accommodation. W Bali’s accommodation sold out extremely fast and whilst you can attend the party without staying at the hotel, we really recommend getting a room for the best experience. At the end of the night, once we were partied out, we just walked up to the room and crashed. There’s no better way to do it.
