Year-round sunshine, combined with an outdoor lifestyle centred around the beach makes Brisbane an idyllic Australian city. This is a sentiment shared by luxury hotel group Marriott who decided it was time for the W brand to re-enter the Australian market, with the Queensland capital set to be the home of their new hotel build, W Brisbane. We took a trip up north to attend the official launch party, check out the glamorous new property, and bask in the first rays of spring’s sunshine.
Perched on the side of the Brisbane river, the W Brisbane’s futuristic facade stands out amongst the corporate skyscrapers throughout the city. Regardless of what room you stay in you’ll be able to enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding areas, the Brisbane River and the botanical gardens. You won’t have to wander far to check out the city, with W Brisbane’s central location a perfect home base if you want to go exploring.
After designing the widely successful W Hong Kong, acclaimed hotel design studio Nic Graham and Associates were once again called upon to create a unique concept for the new W Brisbane. Drawing inspiration from the nearby Brisbane river, undulating curves form the base of the hotel that houses several bars, restaurants and an impressive pool. These curved lines contrast against the rectilinear thirty-four storey tower on top that houses the three-hundred-and-twelve rooms and thirty-two luxury suites.
Each room and suite within W Brisbane features a unique set of furnishings; an impressive feat considering the size of the property. We stayed in one of their Wonderful rooms, complete with king bed, spa tub and natural light flowing through the oversized windows. The decor features a repeating monochrome swirling motif that, when coupled with the retro-styled mod cons such as the cage wardrobe and hanging lights, give the room a sixties vibe.
W Brisbane’s rooms are appointed with up-to-date technology such as the wall mounted Samsung LED TV paired with a premium soundbar from Bowers and Wilkins. We couldn’t resist the urge to pop on our party playlist on Spotify and mix up a cocktail with the curated selection of spirits in the W Mixbar. If being your own mixologist is a little daunting, W Brisbane has included all the tools you’ll need as well as some instructions on how to nail the classics.
Perhaps the most inviting aspect of the room is the generously sized bathtub, capable of fitting two people pretty comfortably. Amenities come all the way from New York City, courtesy of boutique spa Bliss. The fresh lemon and sage fragrances match the vibrant style of the room. If you’re keen to take home more after trying sampling the hotel amenities, they can be purchased from the W Hotels online store. At W Brisbane, as with all W hotels, you won’t have to lift a finger, their Whatever/Whenever service is available twenty-four hours to help fulfil any requests you have during your stay.
W Brisbane’s Away spa is the perfect place to detox, offering a long list of services that would take at least a week to try individually. In contrast to the neutral tones found in many hotel spas, Away takes a different approach with a funky palette of reds, oranges and blues dispersed through the treatment rooms, vitality pools and aromatherapy steam rooms.
While W Brisbane is located in the heart of the city and walking distance to many amazing restaurants and bars, you won’t even need to leave the building to get a bite to eat or an expertly mixed cocktail. Three Blue Ducks continue to spread their paddock to plate ethos and have set up shop with a one-hundred-and-sixty seat restaurant in the complex. Their mission to create ‘Honest Real Food’ is on display, serving fresh produce that has been cooked in their wood fire oven or charcoal pit.
Following on from dinner you can enjoy a drink with panoramic city views at the WET deck poolside bar that features an equally impressive monochrome tiled mosaic throughout. Pull up a stool or sink into a comfy lounge at the Living Room Bar where you’ll find an array of rare scotch whiskies to tipple. This was the perfect place to end the launch party with invited guests, celebrities and members of the media from around the world in attendance.
W Brisbane is an attraction in itself. It makes an ideal spot to base yourself if you want to explore the city, but the fantastic restaurant and bars within the complex give you a compelling reason to stay exactly where you are. We were only there for a night, but with summer approaching we can’t wait to head back and experience everything W Brisbane has to offer. It’s the perfect spot for a sunny weekend getaway.
