Open Sky Installation | COS X Salone Del Mobile 2018
London-based fashion brand COS and contemporary artist Phillip K. Smith III have today unveiled a large-scale sculptural installation, Open Sky for Salone del Mobile 2018, the world’s largest design trade fair. The annual event showcases the latest collections from all the best designers such as Nendo and Vitra. The installation will be open for viewing at the historic 16th century Palazzo Isimbardi from 17-22nd April, throughout the design fair.
Open Sky marks seven consecutive installations at Salone del Mobile for COS, collaborating with an array of international designers. Last year, COS partnered with Studio Swineto create an interactive installation that was inspired by cherry blossom season in Japan, and saw mist filled ‘blossoms’ fall from a sculptural tree. This year, an impressive concrete sculpture sits at an angle in the courtyard of Palazzo Isimbardi, capturing sunlight and the reflections of its visitors on the nearly 14 metre mirrored diameter surface.
Phillip K. Smith III’s work is inspired by light, colour, and form which are all evident in this new installation designed to give each person a unique viewpoint of the surrounding Italian architecture and ever-changing sky. COS and Smith hope this work encourages people to take some time to stop and reflect during the frenzy that is Salone del Mobile. The gardens of the Palazzo also feature smaller sculptures that stand freely, reflecting the green surroundings and light off a corrugated surface.
