A childhood spent immersed in your parent’s work can make you go one of two ways in your adulthood; you’re either totally turned off by it, or you love it and it becomes your career too. Vadim of watch brand Hodina went the latter way. His dad Vladimir has spent his life as a watch repair specialist, starting out at the age of 18. Vadim grew up surrounded by vintage timepieces, absorbing knowledge of movements and complications and aesthetics. This is what lead him — along with his wife Dasha — to launch his own brand.

Hodina, which means ‘hour’ in Ukrainian, are based in Seattle, USA. In only a short few years they’ve built up a refined range of minimal and affordable watches for men and women. The Bellevue is one of their standouts men’s pieces. It’s an exceptionally elegant design; a shining example of how truly beautiful minimalism can be. The PVD coated yellow gold case and gold hands offer the only contrast to the watch’s all-black aesthetic. Texture is used on the dial to add depth and dimension. A blank face with only subtle markings cap off the design. If you want to keep it an all-black piece, wear Bellevue with the smooth vegetable tanned leather strap. Otherwise, opt for the gold mesh strap, which has a bit more of an old-school feel. With a Japanese 1L45 Miyota movement and 3 ATM water-resistance, Bellevue makes for a nice everyday piece.
Hodina’s other men’s style is the Pike. This watch will easily slide into your daily rotation. It has an easy to read dial with large line markings. Its Japanese Miyota Quartz movement requires little maintenance, plus a sapphire crystal glass keeps it protected. Pike is available with either a cognac or brown shaded leather strap; each of these offering nice complements to the stainless steel case and silver hands. Hodina are also currently offering a free Nato strap with Pike, making it a great choice for super casual daily wear.
In addition to their elegant watches, Hodina also crafts rings for men and women from Tungsten Carbide. Proceeds from the sale of each ring go towards various charities that are rotated every few months. $10 from each purchase is currently donated to World Vision.
