Architecture and beer don’t exactly go in hand, but for Melbourne’s Sample Brew, the two are like peas in a pod. The combination comes courtesy of the brewery’s founder, Vedad Huric, who was a professional architect before he decided to start designing beers instead of buildings. Since 2014, Sample has been making a name for itself not only in bars and bottle shops across Australia, but also in galleries, festivals, and other creative spaces too. The brewery wants to elevate the idea of the humble beer, make it something inspiring that can sit shoulder to shoulder with a nice bottle of wine or a whisky.

Sample has put a lot of thought into its packaging design, and it’s here you can see the influence of  Vedad’s architectural background. The theme is refinement and simplicity. This extends into the beers themselves, with the current roster consisting of a 3/4 IPA, lager, gold ale, and pale ale. The latter of these was one of the brewery’s first creations, and is the subject of our review today.

The Taste

American pale ales are my go-to beer type when I want something refreshing and easy to drink. This gets ramped up in the warmer months when the weather calls for a beer that not only tastes good, but one that can really quench my thirst. That’s exactly what Sample’s Pale Ale offers. It tastes light, with citrus and fruit flavours balanced nicely with the hoppiness and bitterness. The beer is preservative and additive free (like all of Sample’s brews), and this really comes through in a clean, pure taste.

The Verdict

A sessionable beer if I ever tried one, the Sample Pale Ale is uncomplicated and tasty. It isn’t trying to be anything too whacky or out there, it’s not an experiment in how far the brewery can take its flavours. It’s just a simple American pale ale, with a taste as refined as the packaging design.
