Danish audio brand B&O Play has long been a Hey Gents favourite, thanks to their premium design and sound quality. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on their Beoplay M5 wireless speaker and share our thoughts.
The Beoplay M5 is the product of award-winning Danish designer Cecilie Manz. It’s a premium and minimalist cylinder of contrasting materials; a smooth, cold metal disc atop a warm, woolly fabric body. It has a good weight, which adds to the product’s already premium feel.
The crafted aluminium disc forms the control centre. You’ll find its pearl-blasted surface especially enticing to touch as you perform simple control gestures – tap to turn it on or rotate it to adjust volume. It then reverts to its original position in a gentle, spring-like movement. The wool-blend fabric cover is available in different textures and colours for customisation. You don’t have to worry about it compromising the sound as the fabric is acoustically transparent.
B&O Play are well known for their top-notch acoustic performance, so naturally, the Beoplay M5 is no exception. With three evenly distributed tweeters, a front-facing mid-range driver, and a woofer, the M5 delivers potent 360-degree sound no matter where you place it. The bass is strong while the mid and high notes are well-rounded. Together they produce warm and balanced sound output.
The M5 connects wirelessly via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Once connected to Wi-Fi, it can use Apple AirPlay, Google Chromecast, and also supports Spotify Connect. Aside from all that it also has its own built-in Beolink Multiroom technology, which allows multiple speakers to be connected throughout the home.
With Spotify Connect and Chromecast, the M5 can stream music on its own while your phone acts as a remote control. We much preferred this over Bluetooth or AirPlay as we had the freedom to do other things on the phone, such as make calls, without disrupting the music. Plus, this doesn’t drain your phone’s battery since all the streaming is done on the speaker itself.
The M5 does have a few limitations. You can’t easily turn the speaker off to save power when it’s not in use. In order to do this, you have to lift up the speaker to access the on/off button underneath. Unfortunately, the speaker also does not have a microphone built-in to allow for voice recognition. This would have been a nice to have since that’s definitely the way things are heading.
The Wrap-Up – Beoplay M5 Review
Overall, the Beoplay M5 is a beautiful speaker that has a refined and minimalist design. The sound is stunning, but so is the price tag. At A$899 it makes it more expensive to set up multiple speakers throughout the home. Having said that, if you’ve always been a fan of B&O Play and want to start experiencing the style and sound of the renowned brand, the M5 is the perfect unit for you.Find Out More: B&O Store
