Votum Watches | The Revival Of A Classic Swiss Watch Brand
Revival Of A Classic Swiss Watch Brand | Votum Watches
When you think of countries associated with the wristwatch industry, chances are you initially think of Switzerland. There’s a reason many watch makers boast their pieces are Swiss made, and it’s because they’re true experts at it. More specifically, the city of Biel in the north-west of the country produces some of the highest quality movements in the world. The big guns like Rolex and Omega call the city home, as does another heritage Swiss watch brand called Votum. Their story began in the early 60s when the watch industry was flourishing in Biel. Unfortunately, the depression of the 70s hit the brand hard, and they’ve remained dormant since then. They’re now experiencing a revival with a little help from two Swiss watch enthusiasts, Rolf Bodmer and Francois Zahnd.
The pair has created a collection of pieces under the Votum name as an ode to the original designs but with a modern touch to them. Using the micro-mechanics and detail that made the brand so popular the first time around, the designs offer a nice alternative to the kind of watches we’re used to seeing today. The Heritage takes direct inspiration from the original style from the 60s of the same name. Showcased in a stainless steel case, the clean dial features lined markings and a date display. Available with either a leather or stainless steel band, this is a really classic and sophisticated design. Other styles include the Elegance, a minimal style which lives up to its name, plus the New Classic.
Impressively, each of the designs in the new Votum collection has a water resistance of 10ATM. This means you could go for a dip in the pool with one on and it wouldn’t be a problem. Furthermore, the brand’s use of premium materials like sapphire crystal for the case make them a nice choice for daily wear. Each style is also versatile enough to work well with either casualwear or more formal attire.
A new addition thought up by Bodmer and Zahnd for their take on Votum is the Mechanical Date function. A rotating bezel surrounds the dial, allowing the wearer to adjust the date without the need of a crown. As well as being functional, this also gives the watch a really unique and interesting look.
