Apple 27-inch 5k iMac Review | The Computer For Productivity

Having recently been in the market for a new desktop computer, we naturally gravitated towards Apple to see what their latest offerings were. After seeing their 27-inch 5k iMac, we were instantly impressed. No one makes tech quite like Apple does; their elegant and minimal designs are enough to shoot them to the top of the list fairly quickly. When researching which computer would be most suitable for us, there were a few non-negotiables. These were that 1) it needed to look good 2) it had to have a super-sharp display and 3) it had to be fast and conducive for productivity. After having looked around at different 5k resolution monitors, we found that other brands cost nearly as much as an entire iMac, and that was just for the monitor itself. Not to mention they weren’t always the most attractive products either. So with the above requirements in mind, we got our hands on this flagship iMac from Apple, and put together this 27 inch 5k iMac review to let you know how it’s held up…

Looks

In terms of the exterior design of the 27 inch 5k iMac, not much has changed from other versions of the Apple desktop computer. A wide black bezel remains around the screen, as do the same ports on the back that you’d be used to having if you’re already an iMac user. That’s not all to say that the lack of a re-design of the new computer is a bad thing, because of course, being an Apple product it is sleek and beautiful. Its slim profile allows it to sit pretty on any desk, and it is the ideal option if you’re going for a minimalist aesthetic with your workspace. Apple also includes a new Magic Keyboard in the box, plus your choice of either a Magic Mouse 2 or Magic Trackpad 2. Significant improvements have been made to these accessories, the biggest of which is they now feature internal batteries that are re-chargable with a lightning cable.

Display

From the first time you turn the iMac on, it’s easy to see just how high the quality of the screen is. It’s no wonder either since it can boast a 5120 x 2880 resolution and 14.7 million pixels. Everything just pops off the screen, with colours being exceptionally bright and vivid. It’s so much nicer to do anything on, even just simple everyday computer use is just way more fun. When you use your computer all the time like us, it doesn’t take long to see a return on the value of the product, simply just from the enjoyment of using it.

If you do a lot of image editing or even if you’re just a fan of photography, the 27 inch 5k iMac should be right at the top of your list if you’re looking for a new computer. Photos simply look breathtaking on the screen. In fact, after we set up our new iMac, we loaded photos onto it and just looked at them for a while in total awe. Apple has utilised something called DCI P3 to display colours, a technology that’s widely used in professional photography and filming. It makes images appear more true-to-life and gives great colour accuracy. After experiencing the 5k resolution of the new iMac, you’ll find it difficult to go back to a lower res display, especially if you’re using it for a creative activity, like designing or image editing.

Speed, Productivity & Multi-Tasking

Using the 27 inch 5k iMac for work is a joy and has undoubtedly increased productivity. The large screen size is ideal, not only for easier photo editing, but you can also have multiple windows and pages open and sitting side by side comfortably. This really allows you to power through work, instead of wasting time minimising and re-opening different documents and pages. Furthermore, as you’d expect from an Apple product, the computer is buttery smooth and very fast. This is mostly thanks to the inclusion of Fusion Drive, which is a hybrid between a traditional hard drive and flash storage. Your most frequently used programs and files are kept close to hand on the flash storage, while less used ones are stored on the hard drive. Fusion Drive makes the computer run like a total dream.

The iMac is also great for multi-tasking in a different way, that is, the 27 inch screen is ideal for watching Netflix and YouTube. There’s not much on live to air television that you can’t find online anyway, so you could even get rid of your TV altogether and replace it with the computer. This is especially handy if space is at a premium in your home and you need to consolidate a few things.

Verdict – Apple 27 inch 5k iMac Review

Apple’s 27 inch 5k iMac is a truly phenomenal product that has really changed the way we work for the better. After doing quite a bit of research, it was clear to see that it’s the only desktop computer that met our requirements. The fast performance it delivers, as well as the quality of its display, large screen size and sleek looks makes it our ideal computer for both work and play.
