A well-designed product should offer more than just good looks. It should also be functional and easy to use. This is especially true when it comes to those products we rely on every day; think things like phone cases, wallets, key rings and bags. No one’s got time to deal with something that just doesn’t work. With this in mind, a few designers and entrepreneurs from around the world got together to overhaul a staple everyday carry product and make it truly well-designed. A brand called Koala-Gear have made the JOEY backpack – a modern, minimalist and ergonomic bag that’s entirely functional.
Tired of backpacks that either only looked good or offered practicality, designers Yonatan Aldouby and Efrat Michman decided to figure out how to unite both, and make it comfortable too. Through countless tests and prototypes, Aldouby and Michman have achieved this with JOEY. From first glance, you can see they’ve accomplished the good-looking part. The bag features minimal embellishments, giving it a very streamlined look. The durable exterior is constructed from a water-repellent nylon and is TPU-coated, to give it extra protection from wear and tear. A limited edition black leather iteration is also available for those after an extra-sharp look.
When you look at some of the different aspects of JOEY, it feels as if the designers forgot everything they knew about backpacks, and just started from scratch to create a wholly intuitive product. JOEY has a capacity of a whopping 25L, with an additional 15L in a stowable compartment. Understanding the need to have easy to access pockets for essentials like your wallet and water bottle, the brand included mesh compartments on the side of the bag, which can be accessed with one hand. JOEY also features a secret passport / valuables compartment that faces your back while wearing the bag to keep its contents secure. Rounded out by an integrated laptop compartment, the bag features separate spaces for all the important stuff you’d carry in your backpack.
One of the best thought out aspects of JOEY is its ergonomic qualities. Where traditional backpacks direct weight away from your body, JOEY directs it towards your hips, making it way easier to carry. Everyone knows how uncomfortable backpacks can start to feel when you’re carrying quite a bit of stuff in them; it can affect your shoulders, neck and back in the short term and lead to worse problems over time too. JOEY sits against your back and features contoured hip pads that absorb the weight. Additional hip and sternum straps (which are stowable when not in use) also help to ease the strain while carrying.
JOEY was recently launched on Kickstarter, exceeding its funding goal very swiftly – and it’s not hard to see why. It’s the ultimate everyday backpack that can truly call itself well-designed.
