There is certainly no shortage of beautiful hotels in Santorini, so figuring out where to stay can be quite the task. If you’re after a private, boutique option, take a look at the stunning Santorini Heights. It’s found at the highest point of the island, near the town of Pyrgos. This area of Santorini is a great place to stay if you’d prefer to escape the usual tourist crowds. It’s away from the bustling towns of Oia and Imerovigli, where hotels are packed in to accommodate all those who flock there for front row seats to the famed sunset. Santorini Heights, on the other hand, is on the quieter side of the island where you’ll encounter far fewer people, making for a very relaxing break.
Built less than two years ago, Santorini Heights is quite unique in that it’s comprised of only four suites. This means that service is always flawless and privacy is guaranteed. When we stayed there recently, my partner and I were warmly greeted by the hotel’s manager upon arrival. He gave us a tour around our suite, and we sat down together at the outdoor table where he showed us a map of the island and pointed out the best spots to visit while in Santorini. This was especially appreciated when it came to the restaurant and bar recommendations, which can often be hit and miss if you rely solely on guidebook or online suggestions. When it came time to go to some of these places, the manager called ahead to make reservations, even going as far as pulling some strings to get us stellar tables at incredible restaurants. This kind of top-notch and personal service made the experience significantly more memorable and enjoyable.
Being located in a Natura 2000 Protected Area, the hotel’s natural surroundings are pristine. This informed much of the design of the hotel, where natural materials like stone and pebbles were used in the construction. Other eco-friendly practices are adopted too, such as solar panels to heat water and rainwater collection cisterns.
Due to the position of Santorini Heights on the island, it would be best if you had a car to explore the local area and beyond, although transfers are easy to arrange through reception too. If you’re into hiking, there are a number of trails leading to ancient ruins and the Monastery of Prophet Elias. Nearby beaches are, of course, a must-visit too. We spent a lot of time at Perissa beach, where the volcanic black sand was a sight to behold. The water was perfect for a refreshing swim, and the shore was even better for lounging in the sun with a cocktail close by.
Cactus Superior Suite
Each of the four suites at Santorini Heights is unique and offers an impressive level of luxury and comfort. They all have their own private balcony and outdoor heated pool, but the two suites on the bottom level are larger than those above. We stayed in one of these larger ones; the Cactus Superior Suite. Clean and crisp, this suite is a minimalist’s dream. It’s a modern take on the traditional architecture found in Santorini, with a white and grey colour scheme contrasting the strong blues of the pool, ocean, and sky outside.
Although we suggest exploring the island during your stay, you could pretty happily spend your whole time in Santorini in the suites; they’re the epitome of luxury. They even have a kitchenette so you don’t actually have to leave if you don’t want to. The hardest decision you’d need to make here would be whether to relax in your private pool, on the sun loungers, the hammock, king size bed, or outdoor sunken lounge. The suite’s other premium amenities include a smart TV in the living room, Nespresso machine with complimentary capsules, a JBL Bluetooth speaker, and even a pillow menu.
In the mornings, a breakfast of your choice is prepared by Santorini Heights’ in-house chef using fresh local ingredients. They even host private cooking lessons if you want to learn some new recipes for your repertoire.
