If you’re like me, then you’ll think of whisky as some sort of esoteric fire water, drunk by many but truly understood by few. Below we’ve gathered a selection that’s designed to help you discover the world of whisky beyond the standard house pour or shelf whisky in many bars across Australia.
Glen Grant 10 Year Old Scotch Whisky
Glen Grant’s 10 year old is an aged single malt that, as it describes on the bottle, carries with it a smooth, fruity and rich flavour. A great first step into single malt whisky, this 10 year old has a robust and varied flavour. It’s matured in ex-bourbon casks for a minimum of ten years, and brings with it a richness that best compares with hints of hazelnut, orchard fruits and leaves a delicate and creamy finish. Malt whisky brings with it higher peaks in flavour than blends and tends to have a more robust and challenging character.
Pronounced ‘Ock-un-tosh-un’ this 12 year single malt is aged in American oak, bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks which give hints of honey suckle and leafy notes as well as a rich and distinctive nuttiness respectively. As a long standing tradition, triple distilling evokes a complex offering of flavours and lends the whisky a hue of ‘golden honey’. Sweetness and citrus notes are found on the nose, with a toffee, tangerine and lime for the palate followed up by a dry lingering nuttiness accompanied with hints of ginger. This is a whisky suited to those wishing to sample the complexities of flavours and sensations whisky can offer, and who have a developed and robust palate.
Chivas Regal is a name well healed in the drinking dens of Sydney, and the rest of Australia. The usual tipple of the self-styled whisky drinker is often the twelve-year-old Chivas. It’s brother, the 18-year-old is an even more impressive drop with a rich blend crafted by master blender Colin Scott. Twenty single malts have been masterfully combined to create this smooth yet distinguished blended Scotch whisky. With hints of orange, barley and vanilla with a deep mellow palette and spicy, oak finish. Bowmore 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky
Hailing from Islay, this aged single malt offers a balanced and expertly crafted flavour. Famed for their peaty, smokey flavour, malts from Islay have a strong reputation in Scotch whisky. Using water from the River Laggan, Bowmore’s twelve year old offers up a warm amber liquid with a smokiness under toned by lemon and honey, heather and a gentle peat finish. A great whisky for those who can handle or prefer the rich, smokey, full flavours of a peat filtered whisky.
Oft overlooked Glen Moray Distillery located in the heart of whisky country in Speyside Scotland is over 117 years old, and has a long and proud history. Their Elgin Classic whisky is an easy to drink entry into the world of scotch whisky. Aged for at least seven years in ex-bourbon casks, this higher than average percentage tipple carries with it sweet malt notes on the nose, a light and sweet flavour, slightly grassy on the palate and with a dry finish. Good for those who prefer a lighter scotch and don’t enjoy the overly woody taste of longer aged contemporaries.
The Select cask blend from Laphroaig is a special selection of the distillery’s key whisky styles. A single malt which has been aged in American oak casks, blended in their quarter oak, PX and triple wood european oak casks, they’ve created a subtle melding of peaty smokiness, woody flavours from oak and a delicate sweetness. Undertones with a rich flavour layered over by a signature peaty flavour and topped by complex sweetness. Another whisky for those who are open to the experience of a flavourful and articulated whisky.
Reported as the master work of Label 5’s master blender, Gold Heritage offers a smooth character that comes from the many flavours of a blended whisky. Characters of hand selected whiskies from a variety of ages go into each bottle. With a sooth and subtle character it brings together hints of vanilla, spices, fruit and delicate smokiness. Great for those who are after a broad flavour profile with out the overt and upfront styles of a single malt.
