Sometimes when you’re travelling, you still want to enjoy some of the comforts of being home, seeing and experiencing things which are completely familiar to you. That’s why when I was deciding on where in LA to visit during a recent trip, I spent a couple of nights at The Orlando Hotel on West 3rd Street. The street is a huge strip spanning six blocks in central LA lined with boutiques and trendy bars and cafes. We felt like we could have been at home in Sydney when we were surrounded by coffee roasters and little bars. The Orlando Hotel is a family-owned boutique hotel which is located on the corner of West 3rd and Orlando (hence the name). It’s a great little place which offers a spa, fitness centre and a pool. Neither my girlfriend or I took advantage of the fitness centre (hey, we were on holiday!) but we did make good use of the pool, which we had to ourselves, surprisingly. Being the weekend and in mid-September, we thought it might be a bit busier but we definitely weren’t complaining. It was a modest size pool with some deck chairs alongside it. The area got plenty of sun so we enjoyed a lazy afternoon of lounging around there. When the heat got a bit too much for us we moved underneath the cabana which also sat alongside the pool. Our room was pretty standard but it had everything we needed. Since there was so much to do in the area we didn’t end up spending much time in the room anyway. The hotel is located right above a place called The Churchill which is an awesome ‘gastropub’. It’s super popular for brunch because the coffee is outstanding but their cocktails are even better, and if there’s ever a time where the two can be consumed during the same meal it’s probably at brunch. The Churchill had a really fun vibe to it and featured a good selection of craft beers too. The food was casual American, and since I’m partial to a good burger, we ended up going there for dinner too. Just next to The Churchill was a cool Juice Served Here hole in the wall where, you guessed it, they serve a variety of cold-pressed fresh juices plus coffee, sandwiches and salads. We thought this place was great for picking up some brekky on the go but just down the road they have a full shop with seating as well. We did quite a bit of shopping when we were in this part of LA – doing some damage in the boutiques along West 3rd Street. The hotel is really close to a huge shopping centre called The Beverly Center too which has shops like Club Monaco, Uniqlo and The Art Of Shaving. It was ideal to be within walking distance of all this, and we found The Orlando Hotel to be a great base to explore the many things there are to do and see in the area.
