3 Tips For Waking Up Better During Winter

We’re almost in mid winter and although we’re pretty lucky in Australia to have mild winters compared to the rest of the world, it’s still shite. The mornings are dark, cold and dreary so all I want to do is stay in bed. What a great idea but unfortunately there is this thing called work, and I kind of have to go to it or soon enough I won’t have a nice warm bed to sleep in.

So if I must get up early 5 days a week, I figured that I might as well make it as pleasant as possible. Here’s 3 great ways I came up with to help bounce out of bed during winter.


1. Wake up naturally with light

Waking up with an alarm? You’re doing it wrong. There’s nothing worse than waking up to a loud annoying bleep bleep bleep. It’s worse during winter as this would happen when it’s still dark outside. Enter the LIFX bulb, I got one of these and it’s changed the way I wake up. Over the course of evolution our bodies have been trained to wake up when the sun rises, so all you have to do to wake up is mimic that. Put a LIFX bulb next to your bed and set it to gradually increase in intensity over a 30 minute period and you will wake to a nice warm glow.

2. Get out of bed warm

A big part of why it’s hard to get out of bed is knowing that if you were to jump out of bed and leave your warm blanket, you could die. Every morning is just so damn cold. So the first thing I do after the warm glowing light wakes me up, is I reach for my heater and turn it on to start warming up the room. You can get a normal heater or you can get one that warms the room fast. I love the Dyson Hot+Cool for a couple of reasons; 1. It has the smart Dyson Air Multiplier technology which is basically a fancy name for spreading the air throughout the room faster and more evenly. 2. It has a remote control! Yeah! That means I don’t have to get out of bed to turn it on, allowing me to snooze for another 5 minutes while the room heats up. That definitely makes it easier to lift up the blankets.

3. Get your groove on

Just before I spring out of bed I reach for my phone to turn on the music. I have Sonos speakers throughout my apartment and this really helps set the mood for my day. Turn on my Happy Morning playlist and the music plays in sync throughout my entire home, including the bathroom. It seriously is one of the best things to set up if you love music. I usually go from bedroom to bathroom to lounge room to get ready for work and there’s nothing like having the same music playing whichever room I’m in. If you have not experienced this, you haven’t lived.

If you don’t have a Lifx, Dyson Hot+Cool or Sonos speakers, you can substitute them with other products but I’ve found that these give me the best experience.
